*The compulsory vehicle preparation fee includes the cost for cleaning the exterior of the vehicle and is included in our quotes/bookings. You are still required to return the motorhome with a clean interior, otherwise a fee of € 240 will be charged. The toilet and waste water tanks have to be completely emptied by the time you drop off the vehicle, otherwise a fee of € 185 will be charged for emptying the toilet and further fees apply to cover the costs for emptying the waste water tank.
The compulsory vehicle preparation fee is automatically factored into the total price when you get an online quote / make a booking on the Motorhome Bookers website.
This fee includes the following provisions:

8% for hires of 31 days or more
There is a corresponding flex rate for each rental day. A certain flex rate is valid for one week from Friday to Thursday. Depending on which day of the week you start your hire, the corresponding flex rate is valid for all rental days until the next Thursday. From Friday on, the corresponding flex rate of this week is valid for the following week, and so on.
Pick-up and drop-off days are counted as one day in total, i.e. each rental night is used for the price calculation in the same way this is done by hotels. To find out which flex rate is currently valid for the vehicle you are interested in, just click for a price calculation for the desired rental duration. The flex rate is calculated by the rental company on the basis of supply and demand and is adjusted every Friday.
Note: If you wish to make any changes to your booking the booking will be calculated by using either the original flex rate or the flex rate at the time of the booking change, depending on which rate is higher.
The following situations are classified as booking alterations:
- Vehicle collection date change
- Change of date for vehicle pick-up or drop-off
- Change of vehicle category

You can select these during the online quoting/booking process. The prices are displayed during this process.

These items can also be rented and paid for when you pick up the vehicle. However, there is no guarantee that they will be available at that late stage.
All rental rates include third party vehicle insurance with cover up to a maximum of € 50 million for damage to third party vehicles as well as separate vehicle insurance for damage caused by the renter to the rental vehicle. The excess that applies to any vehicle damage (damage caused to the vehicle by the renter) is limited to € 2,800. Any damage to the tyres or the underbody of the vehicle is not insured and must be paid for by the renter.
You have the option of purchasing supplementary CDW insurance at pick-up time in order to reduce the level of excess:
- CDW insurance for € 20 per day which reduces the excess from € 2,800 to € 1,500
- CDW insurance for € 26 per day which reduces the excess from € 2,800 to € 900
- CDW insurance for € 32 per day which reduces the excess from € 2,800 to € 400
The excess applies to each incident and will be charged separately if more than one incident occurs.
You are required to provide a deposit of € 2,800 (to cover the excess) when you pick up the vehicle and this can only be done with a credit card (Visa and Mastercard only - no exceptions!). Please note that pre-paid credit cards are NOT accepted. You will not be able to pick up your motorhome unless you present a valid credit card.
The deposit is deducted from the credit card at pick-up and if the vehicle is returned in good condition it will be credited back. All credit card deductions are processed in EUR. Neither the rental company nor the tour operator is liable to pay any cost differences that occur between the cost of the deducted bond and the reimbursement which result from foreign exchange fluctuations or external fees.
Please ensure you have adequate available credit on your credit card
The deposit is reimbursed in entirety by McRent as long as the motorhome is returned with full fuel tanks, clean and undamaged. The rental company reserves the right to charge fees for any damage, necessary cleaning fees, late drop-off and fines incurred during the rental period, etc. These fees are deducted from the credit card in arrears.
If an accident occurs with another vehicle or the driver of another vehicle flees the scene, the renter is liable up to the limit of the excess. The excess is deducted in the first instance - regardless of who is at fault.
The excess is deducted separately for each individual incident within the upper limit.
It is reimbursed as soon as the rental company receives any damage payments from a third party, which can take some time.
After an accident or damage caused by fire, theft or wild animals, the renter must notify the police and the rental station (telephone number on the rental agreement) immediately, but no later than the working day immediately following the day of the accident. Opposing claims may not be recognized.
The renter must provide the rental company with a detailed written report, including a sketch, even in the case of minor damage. If the renter, for whatever reason, fails to prepare the report and the insurance company therefore refuses to pay for the damage, the rental company is obliged to pay the full amount for the damage.
The accident report must be completed, signed and handed over to the renatl company at the latest when the vehicle is returned. In particular, it must contain the names and addresses of the persons involved and any witnesses as well as the registration numbers of the vehicles involved.
All insurance cover is null and void if the terms of the McRent rental agreement are breached. Any damage that is caused when the renter acts outside of the rental company conditions is not covered by the insurance.
Any water and/or saltwater related damage where the renter is at fault is not covered by the insurance. The insurance does not cover damage in the case of any vehicle submersion, the vehicle being stranded in a water area, driving through causeways or beach driving.
Any personal property that is damaged or stolen during an accident, vandalism or a theft is not insured. Private insurance should be purchased in your home country to cover any such issues. In order to avoid theft of personal items from the vehicle it is advised not to leave any valuable items in the vehicle.
In the following cases the renter is liable for the full amount of damage caused either to the rented vehicle or to the property of a third party involved:
- any vehicle submersion or the vehicle being stranded in a water area
- damage resulting from creek or river crossings, driving through causeways or beach driving
- activities that are in breach of the rental agreement conditions, e.g. driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol or dangerous driving
- damage caused by the use of the wrong fuel or when water or oil, etc are not topped up to minimum required levels (causing overheating, frost damage, etc) or where warning signals in the vehicle are ignored
- costs that arise for towing and recovery of vehicles that have been stranded or submerged as a result of the driver's negligence
- vehicle theft due to the driver's or passengers' negligence
- repairs and towing costs that are incurred because of driving on restricted roads or in forbidden areas
- glass damage (e.g. the windscreen, lights or other glass)
- tyre damage that is not a result of faults in the welding
- costs for vehicle keys that have either been lost or locked in the vehicle
- if the driver leaves an accident scene or does not report an accident or damage to the police
- damage caused because the driver disregarded height / weight restrictions or the size of the vehicle
- damage due to overloading of the vehicle
- damage to the interior of the vehicle
- damage due to a failure to take account of the Vehicle’s dimensions
- personal property that is damaged in an accident or is either stolen or damaged during theft is not insured
- damage is caused as a result of other people using the vehicle without the permission of the rental company
The renter is prohibited from using the vehicle as follows: to participate in motor sport events and vehicle tests, to transport easily inflammable, poisonous or otherwise dangerous substances, to commit Customs or other criminal offences, even if these are only punishable according to the law applicable in the place where the offence was committed, for rental to a third party or for the commercial transport of passengers or for any other use going beyond that agreed by contract, in particular driving on terrain not intended for the purpose.
The renter is liable for any fees, costs, fines or penalties that occur during his/her use of the rental vehicle unless any such costs that have taken place are the fault of the rental company.
If speeding tickets and parking fines and/or accidents, etc (e.g. that have not been mentioned to the rental company) come to light the rental company reserves the right to invoice the customer for these costs in arrears as well as a processing fee or charge their credit card.
The insurance options offered by the rental company do not include luggage insurance, nor do they include cover for any damage to passengers. It is therefore recommended to obtain travel insurance that covers accidents, sickness and loss of luggage prior to departure.
All drivers must have held their driving licence for a minimum of 1 year at the time they pick up the motorhome. Drivers from outside the EU who have NO European Driver Licence (such as Australian, New Zealand, American and Canadian licence holders etc.) MUST present an international driving licence at pick-up along with their original national driving licence. Drivers from the EU with a European Driving Licence will only need to present their original national driving licence. We suggest you get in contact with the respective authority for that country before travelling.
Important note for UK licence holders:
From 08 Jun 15, the paper counterpart to the photocard UK driving licence will not be valid and no longer be issued by DVLA. Due to insurance reasons, the rental company requires the information formerly listed on the paper counterpart. You can check your details online www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence no more than 3 days before collection, print a copy of your counterpart and bring it with you when you pick up your vehicle.
UK/EU Category B licences as well as most standard licences of most countries are valid for driving vehicles that weigh below 3,500 kg / 3.5 t incl. contents and passengers. All McRent vehicles in 2021 and 2022 have a total permitted weight under 3.5 t.
For UK travellers: If you passed your driving test prior to 01/01/1997 (when new standardised European Union driving licence categories were introduced) and still have those driving permissions entered in your driving licence you will be allowed to drive up to a total weight of approx. 7,500 kg. This information is provided after discussion with the DVLA but please note that we cannot be held responsible for the accuracy of their statements.
Some standard Australian driving licences allow you to drive vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes so please have a close look at your national licence to make sure your licence works within the parameters of your preferred vehicle.
If in doubt, if you have a non-UK/EU licence or you have an EU category B licence and are unsure about anything regarding total weights please just give us a call or send us an email to check which specifications are present in the vehicle you wish to book.
The minimum age for all registered drivers is 21 years. All drivers must have held their driving licence for a minimum of 1 year at the time they pick up the motorhome.
There are no additional costs for registering additional drivers. Anyone wishing to drive the motorhome must have their details entered in the rental agreement.
The renter is required to provide the names and addresses of any drivers (even if they only drive the vehicle briefly) to the rental company. The renter is responsible and liable for the actions of any of the other registered drivers.
In order to pick up your vehicle you are required to present a valid driving licence, credit card (compulsory), your passport as well as the Motorhome Bookers voucher at the depot.
Please note carefully the maximum number of passengers allowed per vehicle as per the details provided when you click on the picture of your vehicle.
The number of seats or beds can vary within any given category.
Please note the information above regarding the driving licence categories and weight restrictions which apply to each vehicle category.

The vehicles are only permitted for use on sealed, public and authorised roads within Iceland. There is a restriction for driving on roads marked with an "F", vehicles cannot be taken on these roads. Driving on highland roads is also prohibited.
Many roads in Iceland are loose gravel roads and very narrow. Bridges as well are often only suitable for one car at a time. Road speeds on gravel roads should be kept to a minimum. Weather can also change suddenly and winds can be very strong. It is strictly forbidden to drive the vehicle when wind speed exceeds 15 meters per second. In a case like this, find a spot where you can park the vehicle with the front facing the wind and stay in the vehicle until the weather calms down.
Failure to adhere to the driving restrictions/rules will result in all insurance being null and void such that the renter is required to cover any costs incurred in prohibited regions, even in the event of a breakdown or damage that is not the renter's fault.
The vehicle is also not allowed to come into contact with salt water.
Please note that the vehicles may be equipped with a GPS tracking system for your safety.
One-way rentals (vehicle pick-up at location 'A' and drop-off at location 'B') are not available.
All rental vehicles can handle winter conditions, i.e. they are built with a reinforced floor, etc. Between 01 Nov and 31 Mar however, only Urban Plus vehicles are available for hire in Iceland. Winter tyres (free of charge) are required by law for all hires between 01 Nov and 31 Mar and will automatically be included in your online quote/booking. If it is likely that the temperatures will approach zero degrees celsius during your hire McRent reserves the right to insist on winter tyres being used even if you have not prebooked/prepaid them. Facilities such as shower, toilet, etc can be used in the winter months.
Please note, however, that there is no insurance cover provided if any damage occurs as a result of freezing, etc, e.g. if you do not maintain a high enough average temperature in the vehicle to avoid damage to tanks, water heating apparatus and hosing this will count as negligence and there is no insurance cover then provided, i.e. the renter will be fully liable to cover all costs incurred.
Please allow for the fact - when planning out your route, that camping grounds in certain areas may close during winter. Some roads, especially in alpine areas may also be closed for driving or may be simply too dangerous to drive on.
